ACADEMIC COMPUTING AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS
Meets with the Provost and/or the Provost’s representative to offer the
Committee’s
assistance on Academic Computing and Telecommunications matters. Provides
faculty, students, and staff input for the strategic initiatives in the KU
Information Technology Management and Budget Plan. Serves as a forum for
discussing distance learning, online instruction, intellectual property, and
other issues
relating to academic use of information technology. 1 University Support Staff member, three-year
term.
ACADEMIC PROCEDURES AND POLICIES COMMITTEE
Confers with the Associate Provost for Academic Services and/or other administrative officials on academic matters that seem appropriate, including, but not limited to any changes in class scheduling, course duplication, and enrollment procedures. Acts on petitions for exceptions to the general graduation requirements of the University. 1 University Support Staff member, must be a member of the University Senate, 1-year term.
CALENDAR
Respond to requests for variations from the final examination schedule. Ensures adequate arrangements are made each semester to inform students and faculty, through the "Official printed or on-line Timetable of Classes" and the media, of the regulations governing final examinations and the appropriate procedures to be followed if questions arise about the application of the regulations. 1 University Support Staff member, three-year term.INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS
Works with the Office of International Programs (OIP), International Student and Scholar Services, (ISSS), the Office of Study Abroad (OSA) and the Applied English Center (AEC) to address issues affecting international students and programs. 1 University Support Staff member, three-year term.JUDICIAL BOARD
The Judicial Board reviews grievance appeals. For disputes involving alleged academic misconduct or alleged violations of student rights, the intial hearing normally will be at the unit level, however, there is an option to hold an initial hearing at the Judicial Board level. The Judicial Board does not meet on a regular basis. When a hearing is required, a panel is drawn from among the membership appointed.
The Judicial Board membership includes two members of the unclassified professional staff and six members of the university support staff, appointed by the Provost to three-year staggered terms. The Provost also aapoints three administrators, at least one of whom must have faculty status. Typically the other two administrators are unclassified professional staff members.
LIBRARIES
Keeps informed of the budgetary needs and priorities of the KU Libraries, including acquisitions, salaries, staffing, space allocations, and accessibility of library materials. Obtains the counsel of the Library leadership regarding these matters. The USS representative is appointed by the Provost. 1 University Support Staff member, three-year term.
LIBRARY APPEALS
The Library Appeals Board reviews appeals associated with fines levied by the Library. The three members, (one faculty-chair, one student, and one staff member) are appointed by the Provost. The staff member position is for a two-year term and alternates between the university support staff and unclassified staff. Members of this board may not serve simultaneously on the Senate Library Committee. 1 University Support Staff member, 2 year term.
ORGANIZATION AND ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE
Reviews any change under consideration for the administration and organization of the University and how it relates to the University governance system. 1 University Support Staff member, must be a member of the University Senate, one-year term.
PARKING COMMISSION
The Parking Commission develops and recommends to the Provost general policies for the control and management of the parking of vehicles on property under the control of the University, and the traffic control booths. This commission meets monthly during the academic year. Two unclassified and two university support staff members serve staggered three-year terms and may serve successive terms.
PLANNING AND RESOURCES
Holds monthly meetings with the Provost to receive information and provide feedback regarding budgetary and reallocation decisions in all sectors of the university. Includes discussions of the budget rollover policy, projected changes in tuition and in tuition accountability, and the utility payment policy. Reports regularly and in a timely manner to SenEx, especially when budgetary changes are being considered. 1 University Support Staff member, three-year term.
RETIREES RIGHTS & BENEFITS
This is a relatively new committee that deals with issues affecting retired faculty and staff.
University Committees
EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION COMMITTEE
The Employee Recognition Committee selects the university support staff and unclassified employees of the month and year, and plans the fall retirement dinner for university support staff and the annual Recognition ceremony in the spring. This committee meets four times a year (September, December, March, and June). The committee is comprised of 17 university support staff and unclassified staff committee members; majority alternates on a yearly basis; members usually serve staggered four-year terms. Members need to reserve at least four hours for most meetings and a full day for the March session.
UNITED WAY FUND COMMITTEE
United Way Fund committee plans and executes the United Way fund drive on campus, working in coordination with the community United Way Committee. The committee meets during the late spring and throughout the summer, with work concluding in the fall. Membership includes one university support staff and one unclassified staff member.
USS WORK GROUP
The University Support Staff (USS) Work Group was formed to aid the transition of the Classified staff at the University from the Kansas Civil Service System to be University of Kansas Support Staff. Since the transition was completed, the USS Work Group meets as needed and continues to rework old procedures and policies, review new initiatives, and consider implementation issues, etc. The Group is comprised of members of the University Support Staff and administrators from the KU Human Resources and Equal Opportunity Department and the Vice Provost for Administration and Finance's Office. Members of the University Support Staff are appointed to the Group by university administrators.
