University of Kansas Support Staff Senate
To members of the University Support Staff:
Members of the University Support Staff Senate have worked for several months to review and revise the USS Senate Code. The revised Code (February 2011) can be viewed here: Revised Code February 2011 and a copy of the current Code, dated April 2006, can be viewed here: USSS Code April 2006. Changes in the revised Code are shown in bold and strikeout. We need your approval before we send the revised Code to the Provost Office for administrative approval.
The initial reason to revise the Code was that we needed to change the number of USS Senate representatives to the University Senate from three to six. There were other suggestions for change as well. A Code Revision Task Force was appointed and took the opportunity to review the Code in its entirety and noted that we could make the Code more concise, update some of the archaic language and provide more clarification. We moved some information, such as duties of Officers, Senators and Chairpersons, from our Guidelines into the Code.
We also reorganized our committee structure. With the aid of computers, it's much easier for one person to complete the charges of the Elections Committee so we recommend abolishing that committee and vesting the committee's duties in the office of the Vice President. We also suggest that the Communications and the Information Access and Public Relations committees be combined.
The USS Senate has reviewed the Code revisions and agreed that they should be forwarded to all University Support Staff for a vote. If a majority of those who vote approve the changes, the revised Code will be forwarded to the Provost Office. If approved by the university administration, the Code will be added to the University Policy Library.
If you cannot access the links to the codes or, if you have any questions, please contact the Governance Office, 864-5169, govern@ku.edu.
Thank you for the time and effort you take to review the revisions to the Code and to vote on whether to approve or reject the changes. Please vote by 5pm, Wednesday March 23, 2011.
